Long Life Ceremony for Geshe Sopa

Geshe Lhundub Sopa

Deer Park Buddhist Center's guiding spirit, Geshe Lhundub Sopa, is recognized worldwide as one of the greatest living spiritual masters of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition.  For many centuries Tibetan Buddhists have offered Long Life Pujas to their teachers.  The Long Life Ceremony purifies the relationship between teacher and  disciple, and creates the merit for the teacher to remain among us. Since all realization depends on the blessing and guidance of the teacher who is revered  as the embodiment of living wisdom and compassion, the ritual offering practice is extraordinarily precious.  SiLas attended this puja with me last summer.

New Moon

Chinese new year of the Black Water Dragon.
The chinese believe the Dragon is unpredictable,
untouchable, mysterious. A strong water year we would do well to expect the unexpected, bringing what is hidden into the light of the day. This year we have the potential to bring deep feelings of compassion and unity in to the world.
Kuan Yin is the chinese goddess of  mercy and compassion.
She is a manifestation of the Divine Mother.  She helps free us of our hardness of heart and teaches us to have compassion for all.

Ancient Redwood Forest

I watched a 45 documentary tonight about the  Ancient Redwood  Forest. They are the tallest trees in the world.  I learned that  Salamanders live on Redwood trees. Some live their entire  life on one tree.

The name Silas means of the forest.

Beautiful snowfall today

Here is a  meditative video........I made.

How I Cope day to day

I try to develop an attitude which enables me to regard other people as precious,  much in the manner of precious jewels.
Why?
From the point of view of the Buddhist practitioner on the path, many of the high levels of realization
that you gain and the progress that you make on  your spiritual journey are dependent upon cooperation and interaction with others. Our feelings of comfort and security are dependent upon other people's
perceptions of us and their affection toward us. The very moment you develop a sense of caring, others appear more positive. On the other hand  if you reject others they appear to you in a negative way.
The moment you think only of yourself, your mind narrows. Uncomfortable things appear huge and bring you discomfort and a sense of being overwhelmed by misery. The moment you think of others with a sense of caring your mind widens. This helps one develop inner strength in spite of a difficult situation.
This way of thinking gives me courage and a greater sense of calm.
Practicing this helps me cope day to day with life's challenges, especially when my mind starts spinning out.

This advice on "Training the Mind" is from H H Dalai Lama, one of my teachers.

Faith

Faith implies a resolute and courageous act of will. It combines steadfast resolution that one will do a thing with the self-confidence that one can do it.
Faith in Buddhism does not imply "blind faith." As far as Buddhism is concerned the Buddha asks his disciples to investigate any teaching of his and to live and practice what they have learned, rather than believing in something simply because  it is taught.

H.H. Dalai Lama's acceptance speech

After he received his  Mahatma Gandhi International Award for Reconciliation and Peace.

" As we know Mahatma Gandhi is no longer with us but his philosophy of non-violence  is very much alive," the Dalai Lama said.
His Holiness also urged his disciples for their moral support in his efforts to promote non-violence, love, and compassion  throughout the world.
"Genuine non-violence will come only after the inner disarmament of our mind," the Dalai Lama said.  "Only with inner disarmament can we bring about outer disarmament.  Lots of problems in this world are created out of ignorance and greed. With our minds full of fear and hatred it is impossible to achieve non-violence."
He encourages everyone to use human intelligence in challenging and overcoming negative emotions with positive emotions.
